What’s the difference between gelato and ice cream?

Gelato” literally translate to “frozen” in Italian. Simply put, gelato is Italian ice cream. While it is made from the same ingredients as American, what makes it different is its proportions of the ingredients.

Gelato is churned at a much slower pace, so it ends up about 20-30% less air, making it a denser dessert.

Served at a Higher Temperature

Gelato is also served about 15 degrees warmer. Since it is such a dense luxury treat, the higher (but still cold) temperature helps you to easily scoop and eat it—and no brain freeze!

Less Fat

Because gelato uses more milk than cream, it has a lower percentage of fat.
